Building Community through Volunteerism DIY #HomeHacks Speakers TentSustainability Skills & ForestrySat 21 Sep 2024 12:00 PM to 12:50 PMPresenter: Josh Bossin Maine GearShare
Talk Description: Maine GearShare is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization focused on transforming gear access statewide. Our gear lending library offers a resource for groups, individuals, and families—regardless of their socio-economic background—to have access to outdoor gear. Our repair program aims to further break down barriers to the outdoors by keeping gear in the hands of users and out of the landfill. Maine has a longstanding tradition of craftsmanship, manufacturing, and sustainability. However, with gear manufacturers choosing to move production out of Maine, the advent of mass production, and our society’s disposable culture, the art and skill of repair are quickly being lost. Our volunteer program is fostering a community of people enthusiastic about building their repair skills, exchanging knowledge, and preserving Maine's heritage. Working on projects ranging from hand sewing and patching to advanced gear repairs and niche skills, volunteers engage in meaningful work that can be both exciting and challenging. We are excited to share more about our model for giving community members at all levels meaningful volunteer opportunities while simultaneously helping offset the true workload of the nonprofit.
